Snapper 48V HD 500 CFM

Snapper XD 82V 550 CFM

We compare the Snapper HD 48-volt 450 CFM leaf blower and the Snapper XD 82-volt 550 CFM blowers head to head and tell you what we think.

  • 48 Volt system
  • up to 20 minute run-time
  • 7.2 lbs with stock 2Ah battery
  • Battery compatible with:
    • 20″ Lawn Mower

Snapper XD

  • 130 MPH
  • 550 CFM
  • 82 Volt System
  • up to 40 minutes run-time
  • 8.38 lbs with stock 2Ah battery
  • Battery compatible with:
    • 21″ Lawn Mower
    • String Trimmer
    • 26″ Hedge Trimmer

It becomes clear very quickly that the Snapper XD is far superior to it’s lower-powered Snapper HD brother. The HD’s 20-minute max useful time per charge is 1/2 of the XD. The XD has many more compatible tools for which you can share a battery. And the XD has about 20% more CFM than the HD.

These differences have a lot to do with the different voltage systems. The XD at 82-volts is significantly more powerful than the HD’s 48-volt system with similarly rated amp hour batteries.

Snapper is a brand owned by the venerable Briggs & Stratton. When comparing just the number of compatible yard tools, one might think that the 48-volt system was their first entry into this market and then they saw how low the useful time between charges was and gave up this line for the more powerful 82-volt system.

Conclusion

Between the Snapper HD and XD, we have to recommend the Snapper XD. The XD is more powerful, has more compatible products, and lasts longer than the XD.

If you have other Snapper 48-volt system products, then the Snapper HD leaf blower might be a nice addition to your system. But you may want to give up on the underpowered 48-volt system and move up to the 82-volt system if you feel strongly about the Snapper brand.

But the Snapper XD, with its 40-minute max usage time at low power is not a great measure. At full power, this unit will last about 15 minutes. Will that give you enough time to complete your job?

We’ve seen this in other similar 80 volt systems that push the CFM over 500. They are trading useful time before a charge for a little more push.

If you are sold on Snapper, then we suggest you go with the Snapper XD line. But if you are still shopping, take a look at our comparison review between the Snapper XD 550 CFM and the Greenworks Pro 500 CFM. You may like the Greenworks Pro better.

The Ultimate Solution for Yard Tools with a Short Battery Life

Last updated on September 4, 2022 By Ken Leave a Comment

This post may contain affiliate links. I may receive a small commission, at no cost to you, if you make a purchase

One of the biggest complaints about using battery-powered yard tools is that the batteries die before one is done with the job. If you have a large yard, then you know what I’m talking about. It is frustrating if you only have one battery and have to wait for it to recharge to finish your work.

One solution is to buy a bigger battery. You could buy a battery that holds 3 times the power of a common stock battery for about $350. That’s about the cost of another battery-powered yard tool!

They are also heavy – often 6 or 7 lbs. That’s a lot of added weight to be holding in your hand while you blow leaves or grass clippings and even more of a strain when you are using a hedge trimmer to trim the top of a hedge.

The Solution

What if you could get a massive battery that would last for hours and you didn’t have to carry it on your yard tool? What if you could carry all of the weight of the battery on your back and free up your hands to handle the tasks. Now you can~!!

The Ego Battery Backpack

The solution is a 56V Lithium-Ion 28.0 Ah Commercial Series Backpack Battery from Ego. It is 12 times the size of most stock batteries!

Ego makes numerous battery operated yard tools for the home. And now, for commercial operations as well.

This new commercial line is perfect for the homeowner with a large yard who typically uses a blower, string trimmer, or hedge clipper and needs to work for more than an hour or two.

The Ego Backpack Battery, at 28 Ah of power is also more than 3.5 times larger than Ego’s largest 7.5 Ah battery for their home line.

How to Use the Ego Backpack Battery

Along with the commercial backpack battery, Ego makes a charger, leaf blower, hedger, and trimmer designed uniquely for the backpack battery.

The user puts the battery on their back and plugs in the tool they need to use. When they need to change tools, they just unplug one tool and plug in the other.

Cost Comparison

The cost is about 30% more than similar consumer-grade tools plus 4 batteries to match the Amp-hours of the backpack battery.

The commercial tools are clearly a higher grade of construction and will last longer than the consumer line.

Ego reports that this solution has 80% the power and run-time of a gas-powered solution but with far less noise.

Pros and Cons

Consumer Grade Option

ProsCons
  • 27% less expensive
  • heavy 6.3 lbs batteries
  • Battery weight makes tool back heavy, out of balance, and adds to fatigue

Commercial Grade Option

ProsCons
  • Lasts all-day
  • More powerful leaf blower
  • Hedge Trimmer has about 75% more cutting capacity
  • Units built to last longer
  • More expensive

Who is this solution for?

If you do at least 2 hours of yard work, with at least two of these tools, a leaf blower, a string trimmer, and a hedge trimmer, we think this is a great solution.

It can last for hours, with less fatigue than if you had one heavy battery attached to the back end of your tool.

Who is this not for?

If you don’t use at least two of these yard tools, and only need to use a tool for about an hour, then we recommend these solutions:

Ego 180 MPH 650 CFM Leaf Blower

Ego 15″ Inch String Trimmer

Ego 24″ Hedge Trimmer

Ego POWER+ 56V 650 CFM

Greenworks Pro 80V 500 CFM

For a very long time, the Greenworks Pro leaf blower has been our top recommended blower – until today. The Greenworks Pro 80 is still an excellent blower, but with the introduction of the Ego POWER+ leaf blower with a beefy 5.0 Ah battery, it is not only more powerful than the Greenworks Pro, but it has an amazing 200-minute max operating time.

In this article, we’ll compare the Greenworks Pro leaf blower with the Ego POWER+ blower head to head and we think you’ll see why the Ego POWER+ is our new top pick.

Ego POWER+ 650

  • 180 MPH
  • 650 CFM with Turbo button
  • 225-500 CFM Speed control
  • 56 Volt system
  • 15 to 200-minutes of run-time
  • 12.9 lbs with stock 5Ah battery
  • Battery compatible with:
    • Lawn Mower
    • String Trimmers
    • Hedge Trimmers
    • Edgers
    • Pole Saw
    • Snow Throwers
    • and More!
  • 2.5Ah and 7.5Ah battery options

Greenworks Pro 80

  • 125 MPH
  • 500 CFM
  • 3-speed trigger
  • 80 Volt system
  • 20 to 70-minute run-time
  • 8.2 lbs with stock 2Ah battery
  • Battery compatible with:
    • Lawn Mowers
    • String Trimmers
    • Hedge Trimmers
    • Pole Saw
    • Snow Throwers
    • Tiller/Cultivators
  • 2.5Ah, 4Ah, 5Ah battery options

The Greenworks Pro has been our top pick for almost 3 years. The Ego POWER+ challenges that top position with some extra features. The two have many similarities, but the Ego POWER+ 650 CFM shows more options, more power, and longer battery life.

One way they are similar is their top variable air speed setting of 500 CFM. Both can maintain a steady 500 CFM. The Ego POWER+ has a variable speed control with a top speed of 500 CFM. The Greenworks Pro has a 3-speed switch with a top speed of 500 CFM.

A major difference, and one reason we pick the Ego Power +, is the Ego’s 650 CFM power boost switch for short blasts of maximum power. The Greenworks Pro unit does not have a feature like this and can only maintain a high speed of 500 CFM.

The other main difference is the total run-time. This can vary quite a bit based on the size of the battery and the speed you choose to work. The slower the speed, the longer the battery life. The Ego Power+ wins in this measure almost exclusively by having a larger stock battery of 5Ah. The Greenworks Pro comes with a much smaller 2Ah battery. The Greenworks Pro can operate with a larger battery, and they do offer a similar 5Ah battery.

The Ego POWER+ has a top run-time of 200 minutes at it’s lowest power setting. The Greenworks Pro has a top speed of 70 minutes. This is not a fair comparison since this compares their two stock batteries, 5Ah and 2Ah. But even if we change out the Greenworks Pro units 2Ah battery with a 5Ah battery, the calculated max run-time of 175 minutes at low power does not beat the Ego Power+ unit at 200 minutes of max run-time.

Conclusion

There’s an easy winner here in the Ego POWER+ with a greater range of speed choices, a more powerful max airspeed, and a longer battery life.

If you have other Greenworks Pro equipment, the Greenworks Pro is still a good choice. But if you have not invested in any Greenworks Pro tools, then we would recommend the Ego Power+.

Greenworks Pro 80V 125 MPH 500 CFM

Snapper XD 82V 130 MPH 550 CFM

We compare the ==Greenworks Pro== Greenworks Pro 80 GBL80300 80-volt 500 CFM leaf blower and the Snapper XD 82-volt 550 CFM blowers head to head and tell you what we think.

Greenworks Pro 80

  • 125 MPH
  • 500 CFM
  • 80 Volt system
  • 20 to 70 minute run-time
  • 8.2 lbs with stock 2Ah battery
  • Battery compatible with:
    • Lawn Mower
    • String Trimmer
    • 26″ Hedge Trimmer
    • 10″ Pole Saw
    • 20″ Snow Thrower
    • 10″ Tiller/Cultivator
  • 3Ah and 4Ah battery options
Snapper XD

  • 130 MPH
  • 550 CFM
  • 82 Volt System
  • up to 40 minutes run-time
  • 8.38 lbs with stock 2Ah battery
  • Battery compatible with:
    • 21″ Lawn Mower
    • String Trimmer
    • 26″ Hedge Trimmer

The Greenworks Pro has been our top pick for almost 3 years. The Snapper XD is the first to come close to knocking the Greenworks Pro off our top slot. The snapper XD moves more air (CFM) by 10% with a slightly faster MPH. At this point, you might think we’d give Snapper the win. But not so fast.

The Snapper XD suffers from what a lot of over 500 CFM battery-powered leaf blowers do: a short battery life. At full speed, the blower lasts for about 15 minutes which is hardly enough time to get a job done. Slow the blower down to its lowest speed and it can only run for 40-minutes. Whereas the Greenworks Pro can go for 70 minutes. We’ve seen this with other leaf blowers that break the 500 CFM limit utilizing the current battery technology. They are powerful but they just don’t last long.

There is one possible save for the Snapper XD and that is their optional larger capacity batteries. They sell a 4Ah and a 5Ah battery. Using one of those larger batteries, in theory, could possibly give you 45 minutes of run time at full power. The catch is that these larger capacity batteries cost more than the blower alone.

But Greenworks Pro also has a 4Ah battery that in theory would double its run time giving the Greenworks Pro the win.

Conclusion

The Greenworks Pro is still our top choice and our recommendation over the Snapper XD. The Greenworks Pro can run up to 70 minutes at low speeds which is more than the Snapper’s 40 minutes. The Greenworks Pro wins a head to head comparison.

If you only need a leaf blower and a few other battery-powered yard tools, then the Greenworks Pro is the best choice.

If you have other Snapper XD tools (not the 48-volt versions), then you could buy the Snapper XD blower only and a large capacity battery and boost your setup nicely.

Makita XBU02 36V 120 MPH 473 CFM

We compare the Greenworks Pro 80 GBL80300 80-volt 500 CFM leaf blower and the Makita XBU02 36-volt 473 CFM blowers head to head and tell you what we think.

Greenworks Pro 80

  • 125 MPH
  • 500 CFM
  • 80 Volt system
  • 20 to 70 minute run-time
  • 8.2 lbs with stock 2Ah battery
  • Battery compatible with:
    • Lawn Mower
    • String Trimmer
    • 26″ Hedge Trimmer
    • 10″ Pole Saw
  • Larger battery capacity options
Makita XBU02

  • 120 MPH
  • 473 CFM
  • 36 Volt System
  • 20 to 28 minutes run-time
  • 9.9 lbs with 2 stock 5Ah batteries
  • Battery compatible with:
    • Lawn Mower
    • String Trimmers
    • 22″ and 25″ Hedge Trimmer
    • 16″, 14″ and 12″ Chain Saw
    • And about 220 other tools
  • 6 speeds
See price at Amazon

See price at Amazon

The Greenworks Pro has a higher MPH and a higher CFM than the Makita leaf blower. This means it will blow air with more velocity and with more force than the Makita. They both have a full force run-time of 20 minutes but Greenworks Pro can run more than double the time of the Makita when they are both at lower speeds. The Greenworks Pro blower has a higher voltage system which typically offers longer run-times.

Conclusion

The Greenworks Pro is about 5% more powerful than the Makita. And the Greenworks Pro can run up to 70 minutes at low speeds which is more than double the Makita’s 28 minutes. The Greenwors Pro wins a head to head comparison.

If you only need a leaf blower and a few other battery powered yard tools, then the Greenworks Pro is your best deal.

If you have Makita tools, or plan to buy more than just battery powered yard tools, then the Makita XBU02 is a good choice. Makita is a well known and sturdy brand with over 220 tools that can use the same battery as this Makita leaf blower. If you are curious about the Makita tool line up, take a look at these Makita tools.
